Success Stories
In 1995 Dr. Spencer Stang, the founder and current President of SportLab, Inc. started work on his Ph.D. Dissertation. His research examined in great detail how football experts (that is, scouts) make player evaluations. Dr. Stang learned that scouts use decision making techniques that are similar to those of experts in other fields. While this is generally a positive statement, scouts also make some of the same mistakes that other experts make when making evaluations. These mistakes are, in a sense, pre-wired into the human brain because (in many cases) they work to our advantage. Ironically, expertise sometimes makes these mistakes worse because experts tend to think through problems in a more disciplined fashion than non-experts. In other words, if a personnel expert makes a mistake, he tends to make it consistently. This realization, and the search for a system that would allow experts to maintain their disciplined thought process, yet not make "pre-wired" mistakes, led Dr. Stang to develop a technology called "BASELINE." When deciding who to draft, BASELINE improves predictive accuracy by over 36% over the accuracy of a playoff caliber NFL team.
The ultimate goal is to help a single NFL team win three Superbowls in a ten year timeframe (our definition of "dynasty"). In order to achieve this goal, SportLab will provide your team with technology and expertise that will allow team decision makers to have better data than they've ever dreamed possible. Data that would make it impossible to ignore options like Tom Brady and Ed Reed.
The statistical technology that Dr. Stang has developed has proven not only to be successful for NFL draft purposes, but also for evaluating potential employees in a diverse range of companies. Current clients utilizing other Stang Decision Systems include Anheuser-Busch and BP-Amoco, and it is important to note that, to this day, no client has ever discontinued their use of Dr. Stang's services. Above all, BASELINE finds the best person for the job, including the players that could make the difference for your team.
